Late Thursday afternoon I was coming home from a meeting with Steve Hallman. I was low on gas, so I turned into the Exxon right off of our exit to fill up. While there a man came up to me asking for directions. He had a caring bag and a garbage bag full of stuff, so I knew he was probably needing more than he was asking for. After asking for directions, he almost immediately asked me for a ride to get to Bessemer.
I spent several minutes there talking with him. I came to find out his name was Tim Newman, he was homeless, had no money, and was about to have a major surgery to remove cancer in his face and head.
I ended up taking Tim for a hamburger while I placed calls to several folks trying to find him somewhere to sleep for the night. Eventually I took him to the Jimmy Hale mission, where they said they'd keep him for the night and give him breakfast in the morning. I spent all day Friday trying to find Tim a place to live on his small monthly budget with no success. That evening I took him to a hotel in Bessemer that rents by the week, and I put him up through Wednesday morning - the day of his surgery.
Tim is all alone at a very difficult time in his life. Facing this cancer surgery, which does not offer much chance of success, trying to get back on his feet after just leaving prison in the fall, and having no family or friends. I believe God has caused our paths to cross so Lifesong can take him under our wings and be a help to him. I told Tim that I think God wants him to be our first official member. He seemed to agree.
Please be praying for Tim, his surgery and health, as well as God providing a place for him to live on his small monthly income.
